Healthy Habit #1: Keep To Your Routines
The best thing you can do to stay healthy during the holidays is keep to your routines as much as possible. Keep up with the exercise routine that gives you energy and clears your head. Stick to the recipes and portion sizes that you know fill you with nutrition without overstimulating your system. And, importantly, don’t skip your self-care.
Your self-care routine might be getting out in nature everyday, it might be your exercise regimen, it might be baking with the music blasting, it might be reading a good book.
If the holidays season is usually tricky for you, I recommend trying out Silk + Sonder’s beautiful self-care journals. They are designed by a team of psychologists to look after your mental health and feature mood trackers, meal planners, habit trackers and more. Check them out here.
Healthy Habit #2: Focus on Nourishment
Eating smart during the holidays can be a challenge. You’re often surrounded by decadence and temptation! It’s important to be grateful for the abundance of this time, whilst still nourishing yourself with proper nutrition. One of the best ways to protect yourself from overindulgence is to ensure you prioritize a nourishing breakfast. Everybody is different, but what works great for me is starting the day with a vegan protein shake.
One of my favorite shakes is Nourify Plus from Previnex, which comes in vanilla and chocolate. They taste great, even when just mixed with water. Previnex is an excellent choice because their shakes boast 20g of vegan protein, which will keep you full and energetic for hours.
Plus, they have a beautiful give back program that gives a free bottle of children’s multivitamins to at risk children for every purchase. You can read more about their give back program here.
If you find that nourishing yourself with a healthy breakfast challenging, I can highly recommend their 14 Day Championship Breakfast Challenge, so you can see how having an awesome vegan protein shake every morning feels for you. With a 100% money back guarantee, you’ve got nothing to lose!
Healthy Habit #3: Safeguard Your Digestion
More often than not the silly season equates to overeating. It takes an enormous amount of willpower to eat to hunger when delicious food is all around you. Trying to control yourself through sheer will just spoil what should be a joyous time. Instead, accept that over the next few months you might eat more than your fair share a couple of times, and that’s okay!
I’ve found that being conscious of my inner critic, and making sure my self-talk is kind makes a huge difference. Would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself? Arguably for many of us, it’s our mental health that faces stress more than our physical health. Even so, when you’ve eaten too much, the inevitable digestive discomfort only makes the mental discomfort worse. For this reason I like to keep my secret weapon on hand. What is this secret weapon? Digestive enzymes!
Our bodies naturally produce enzymes to improve digestion, but when we’re under stress and as we get older, our natural levels of enzymes can decrease. This leads to digestive imbalances which means the all too familiar issues of gas and bloating. Flatter Me from Hum Nutrition are affordable, sustainably sourced and extremely effective. I love how they contain both enzymes that target fats, proteins and carbs, as well as calming herbs like peppermint leaf and ginger. Here’s what one of the 200+ five star reviews says:
I was having serious gastro issues after eating. TMI but nothing was moving! I did alot of research on digestive enzymes and how they could help. My research kept coming back to HUM and Flatter Me so I caved and bought it. Ive been using it for about two months now and it seriously has made such a difference for me! If you are having digestion issues this is your answer. – Victoria
Healthy Habit #4: Stay Hydrated
You’ve heard this advice before, but it bears repeating. Hydration is the cornerstone to a healthy lifestyle. Drinking water first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day. Better yet, add some lemon or cucumber to sneak in addition vitamins and minerals.
Drinking enough water is important for so many reasons. It helps to flush your body of toxins, supports your kidneys, your digestion, and helps you feel alert and focused. I keep my hydro flask beside me at all times. It’s by my bed, beside my yoga mat, on my desk, in the car, at the dinner table. I literally can’t live without it!
If you find water a bit boring, teas are another healthy way to meet your body’s hydration needs and more. I love starting the day with green tea, which not only hydrates the body but has other amazing health benefits like anti-aging and immunity boosting properties.
Healthy Habit #5: Get Plenty of Sleep
We all know that good sleep, much like water and nutrition are essential ingredients to a healthy lifestyle. But getting restful sleep is easier said than done, especially during the holidays. Having good bedtime routines, like meditation, yoga and reading are all excellent ways to wind down.
However, during the holiday season you often head to bed far later than usual, physically exhausted but with your mind on overdrive. On those nights, and whenever you need it, it helps to have a supplement on hand to help you relax naturally and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Melatonin supplements are everywhere, and it can be super confusing to figure out which one will work for you. I recommend Hum Nutrition’s Beauty Zzzz’s because it’s 3 vegan ingredients, Vitamin B6, Calcium and Melatonin help to promote a naturally restful sleep, without being addictive, or giving you a hangover the next day. Plus at only $10, it’s very affordable.
Thanks for reading! I hope these 5 healthy habits help you to navigate the holiday season with ease.
