Address Sleep and Stress
The best thing you can do to improve your skin is focus on getting restorative sleep and reducing stress. The two often go hand in hand as if you’re dealing with a lot of stress, often the quality of your sleep suffers. Likewise, the more sleep deprived you are, the higher your cortisol levels are. It’s a vicious cycle.
Getting good sleep every night is not as hard as it sounds. It has a lot to do with reducing stress, and one of the best ways to tackle stress and get good sleep, is to equip yourself with a high quality CBD product. CBD oil can be life changing, because it’s a reliable way to naturally reduce stress and get great sleep. If you’re wondering which CBD product would be a great fit for you and your needs, check out my blog post on the different ways you can take CBD here. By the way – all the CBD products I recommend are non-habit forming, so you can take them with total peace of mind.
Try Joy Organic’s Tranquil Mint CBD oil for a refreshing, alcohol free, premium grade tincture. Or, try CBD pillow for an innovative approach to using CBD for sleep. Their pillows are hand-crafted in the USA, hypoallergenic and come with a 10 year guarantee.
By the way, speaking of pillows I should remind you of the importance of changing your pillowcase regularly. And even better, investing in a few anti-microbial pillowcases.
My favorite CBD brand Joy Organics have given me a special 15% discount code to share with my readers. If you like what they offer simply use the code: AHIMSA15
TL;DR – Skin care habit #1: Try CBD to help reduce stress and get good sleep.
Nourish Your Body
Remember the old adage, ‘you are what you eat’? If you want your skin to be clear, glowy and radiant, you have to eat well. Start to think about food in terms of the nutrients it will give you, instead of calories. Yellow, orange and green fruits and vegetables are especially powerful foods for clear skin because they’re rich in vitamin A. Here’s a brief list of skin healthy foods:
- Peppers (all colors!)
- Sweet Potatoes
As well as eating plenty of whole foods, increasing your protein intake can also help, because it’ll help you stay fuller for longer, and avoid spikes in your insulin levels. Carbohydrates spike your body’s insulin levels, which in turn increases the activity of androgen hormones. These hormones then encourage more rapid cell growth which boosts sebum production, leading to more clogged pores and more acne! A great first meal of the day is a filling smoothie made with vegan protein powder (avoid whey as it can further inflame acne), a greens powder for a hit of antioxidants and nutrients and to reduce inflammation, a banana, berries and almond or soy milk. Yum! If you don’t have a vitamix already, it’s well worth the investment.
There’s one skin supplement that you should try, which can make a huge difference to your complexion. Skin Squad Pre+ Probiotic from Hum Nutrition nurtures your gut and clears your skin naturally. It was specifically formulated to help clear acne-prone (non-cystic) skin by balancing the gut microbiome. It contains NINE different strains of probiotic, 40 billion organisms and konjac root, which is a powerful prebiotic. Check out the almost 100 five star reviews for yourself! TL;DR – Skin care habit #2: Nourish your body with good food first, then supplement.
Water and Movement Are Your Best Friends
Keeping a reusable water bottle with you at all times is key to staying hydrated, which helps your body flush out toxins and function properly. I use this Hydro Flask with straw lid every single day and fill it up around twice a day. Hydro Flask is my all time favorite brand because their quality is unparalleled. I’ve used my Hydro Flask every single day for the past 3 years! It keeps my cool drinks cool and my hot drinks hot. It’s super easy to clean and looks chic. Plus, I love that you can design your own bottle.
Drinking herbal teas is another great way to hydrate, especially this delicious Dandelion tea, which supports liver function. Chamomile, Jasmine and Ginger teas are also great options that not only hydrate your body, but also provide it with natural, herbal support.
Sweating on a regular basis also helps to clear your skin because it aids your body’s natural detoxification process by flushing out toxins and acne causing bacteria. Exercise might be the most obvious way to break a sweat, but saunas are also extremely helpful, especially if you’re injured, resting or just not feeling your best.
To use sweating to your advantage, just make sure you don’t let it sit on your face and body once you’ve finished your workout, or time in the sauna. If you think about traditional sauna practices in Scandinavia, they often switch between ice cold water and the hot steam rooms. Of course, there are other reasons why they do this, but washing off the sweat is key! Remember that towels and clothing harbor germs, so keep on top of laundry and wash your workout clothes, towels, pillowcases and washcloths often.
I do 100% of my workouts at home and absolutely love it. Currently, I’m doing a mixture of yoga and HIIT workouts from Boho Beautiful and Heather Robertson. My at home workout essentials are my aforementioned hydro flask water bottle, resistance bands, a yoga mat and sweat towel.
TL;DR – Skin care habit #3: Drink plenty of water and/or tea, and move your body everyday.
Nail Down Your Skin Care Routine
Everything you rub into your skin will be absorbed into your bloodstream. Therefore, it’s important to be selective about the products you use everyday. How many skin care products are in your bathroom now? Do you know what the active ingredients in each one are, and why you use them?
If you’re looking to adopt this approach of ‘less is more’, try OSEA Malibu. You can start by taking their quiz that will give you a personalizes skin care routine in less than 5 minutes. Do you have acne prone skin like me? Start off with a simple 3 step routine of their Ocean Cleansing Mudd, Hyaluronic Sea Serum (which is award winning), and Blemish Balm, (that doubles as a primer). They’re all amazing! All of OSEA’s products are cruelty free, non-toxic and results driven.
It would be remiss to publish a skin care article without mentioning Spin for Perfect Skin. With over 75,000 five star reviews, it’s a cult favorite that you’ve likely heard of before. While you shouldn’t use it daily, making this amazing exfoliating brush part of your skin care routine is sure to help you achieve smooth, flawless skin. It helps to deep clean your skin, minimize the appearance of pores is a great way to prep the skin to properly absorb masks, serums and moisturizers. Check it out here.
TL;DR – Skin care habit #4: Less is more – use only a few good quality skin care products.
Opt For Non-Toxic Makeup
If you’re dealing with acne and breakouts, it’s important that you don’t further inflame it by covering it up with comedogenic (pore clogging) makeup. Give your skin time to breathe by avoiding makeup as much as possible, and only use certified clean beauty brands, which are free from toxic chemicals. This is important because it allows your skin to reach its own natural balance. Remember, anything you put on your skin will enter your bloodstream!
If you’re looking for a non-toxic beauty brand, try CLOVE + HALLOW. They’re an award-winning clean, cruelty-free and vegan cosmetics line that has options for women of every skin tone. They create safe makeup that performs just as well as your conventional favorites in texture, payoff, and shade range, without breaking the bank or compromising on ingredients. Plus, they replace questionable and confusing chemicals with a small but well-researched roster of safe ingredients. Here’s an overview of what they offer:
- FlexLash Mascara for $24
- Conceal + Correct in 10 different shades for $18
- Lip Crème in 9 different shades for $20 (love their true red called Damsel)
- Pressed Mineral Foundation in 14 different shades for $30 – and a refill is just $8
- My personal favorite, their Makeup Melt for $36.
- + a lot more!
TL;DR – Skin care habit #5: Only use non-toxic makeup that won’t clog pores or inflame your skin
