Always Stay Hydrated
Keeping a big water bottle with you at all times is key to staying hydrated, which helps your body flush out toxins and function properly. I use this Hydro Flask with straw lid every single day and fill it up around twice a day. Drinking herbal teas is also extremely helpful, especially this delicious Dandelion tea, which supports liver function. Chamomile, Jasmine and Ginger teas also help reduce inflammation in the body.
Eat The Rainbow
Start to think about food in terms of the nutrients it will give you, instead of calories. Yellow, orange and green produce are especially powerful foods for clear skin because they’re rich in vitamin A. So fill your plate with:
- Sweet Potatoes
A Note On Protein
As well as eating for clear skin foods, increasing your protein intake can also help a lot. This is because it’ll help you stay fuller for longer, and avoid spikes in your insulin. Carbohydrates spike your body’s insulin levels, which in turn increases the activity of androgen hormones. These hormones then encourage more rapid cell growth which boosts sebum production, leading to more clogged pores and more acne! A great first meal of the day is a filling smoothie made with protein powder, a greens powder for a hit of antioxidants and nutrients, a banana, berries and almond or soy milk. Yum! If you don’t have a vitamix already, it’s well worth the investment.
A Daily Supplement & Occasional Cleanses For Clear Skin
There’s one supplement that you should try that can make a huge difference to your complexion. Skin Squad Pre+ Probiotic nurtures your gut and clears your skin naturally. It was specifically formulated to help clear acne-prone (non-cystic) skin by balancing the gut microbiome. It contains NINE different strains of probiotic, 40 billion organisms and konjac root, which is a powerful prebiotic. Check out the almost 100 five star reviews for yourself! You can get $10 off your first order here.
While cleanses aren’t for everyone, I personally love doing them occasionally (as in once or twice a year). What can you expect from doing a cleanse? Glowing skin, increased energy, improved digestion, greater mental clarity and more. I’ve done juice fasts, water fasts, liquid diets and liver cleanses. However, the lack of guidance in these self prescribed cleanses can be really problematic, especially if you already have low levels of key nutrients. That’s where Clean comes in.
Clean Program has a variety of cleanses that are safe, doctor developed and come with qualified support before, during and after your program. They have a 21 day program, a 7 day program, a maintenance program and a great line of natural everyday supplements. I love that they combine the wisdom of ayurvedic medicine, functional medicine and intermittent fasting into one cohesive approach. Check it out to see if it’s a good fit for you here.
Treat Yo’ Self – Healthily
If you’re like me, any kind of perceived deprivation will just make you want to rebel! For example, I recently decided to do a whole month without sugar (which is a great thing to do if you want to get clear skin fast!). I did better than expected, but part of the reason for that was I found a different way to treat myself. In signing up for a couple of subscription boxes, I felt happy and proud of my decision because both the elimination of sugar and these boxes were doing me a world of good.
My favorite place to browse subscription boxes by far is Cratejoy. It’s an amazing way to discover the thousands of available options organized in neat categories. I personally love the self-care & wellness, vegan, vitamins and eco-friendly sections. Here are my top 5 picks:

Sweat For Clear Skin
Sweating on a regular basis helps to clear your skin because it aids your body’s natural detoxification process by flushing out toxins and acne causing bacteria. Exercise might be the most obvious way to break a sweat, but saunas are also extremely helpful, especially if you’re injured, resting or just not feeling your best.
To use sweating to your advantage, just make sure you don’t let it sit on your face and body once you’ve finished your workout, or time in the sauna. If you think about traditional sauna practices in Scandinavia, they often switch between ice cold water and the hot steam rooms. Of course, there are other reasons why they do this but washing off the sweat is key! Remember that towels and clothing harbor germs, so keep on top of laundry and wash your workout clothes, towels, pillowcases and washcloths often.
I do 100% of my workouts at home and absolutely love it. Currently, I’m doing a mixture of workouts from Chloe Ting and Heather Robertson. My at home workout essentials are my hydro flask water bottle, resistance bands, a yoga mat and a sweat towel.
Reduce Stress & Increase Rest
Anxiety and a lack of sleep are a recipe for skin issues. They both induce your adrenal glands to produce the stress hormone cortisol, which leads to an increase in sebum production and clogged pores. Managing stress and getting enough sleep are one of the best preventative measures you can take.
I struggled with PTSD, anxiety and chronic stress for a long time, which only made the skin issues I already had worse. I found that 10 minutes of daily meditation, CBD and adaptogenic herbs worked incredibly well in helping me de-stress and sleep better.
I use Insight Timer everyday. It’s an essential, yet simple part of my morning routine. I put my legs up against the wall and spend 10 minutes repeating positive affirmations like, ‘I am calm’, ‘I am loved’ and ‘I am happy’ while visualizing those states and truly feeling it.
With the novel coronavirus, COVID19 wreaking havoc on our usual routines, it’s totally normal to be dealing with an increased level of stress. And if you already struggle with anxiety, this extra stress can get really overwhelming. Now is an excellent time to try CBD and see how it works for you. My personal recommendation? Joy Organics CBD formulas are very high quality, made with organic ingredients that you can trust. They give an impressive level of transparency by making their detailed lab testing public for each product and batch. Plus, they offer a money back guarantee and make charitable donations each month.
The team at Joy Organics have given me a special 15% discount code to share with my readers. If you like what they offer simply use the code: AHIMSA15
Adaptogenic herbs (plus some mushrooms) naturally support the body’s ability to deal with stress. They were named for their awesome ability to “adapt” their function to the changing needs of the body. Some adaptogens you might’ve heard of already are ashwagandha, ginseng and rosemary.
A great formula to harness the power of adaptogens and relieve anxiety is Stress Fighter from REBL Jane. Each ingredient is clinically proven to relieve stress, and help support sleep and energy. You can get 10% off your first order here. Simply use the code REBL10.
A Tailored Clear Skin Routine
As mentioned in ‘8 Habits Of Girls Who Have Healthy Hair’, having a regime that is tailored to your particular hair type, or in this case skin type, is extremely important.
An efficient way to get a tailored skincare routine is to take advantage of skincare quizzes like this one from True Botanicals or this one from OSEA Malibu. By the way both of those companies have amazing regimens that are already put together like True Botanical’s Clear Collection and OSEA’s Blemish Prone Essentials.
If you have sensitive skin, you’ll want to stick to a hydrating cleanser. I use the Squalane Cleanser from the Ordinary, and love that it’s gentle enough to take off my eye makeup without any stinging.
If you have dry skin, a hydrating cleanser like OSEA’s Ocean Cleansing Milk is a good option. It’s an ultra-gentle cleanser that soothes inflammation and redness while moisturizing dry skin. Perfect for those with sensitive, mature or sun-damaged skin. It’s also highly effective and calming for rosacea.
If you have oily or acne prone skin, try the Zit No More Kleanser from Better Skin Co. This daily gel cleanser contains salicylic acid, kombucha, and tea tree oil to fight current blemishes and help protect against future blemishes. Removes grime while assisting in the treatment of problem skin.
A Note On Face Washing:
Hot water is not your friend. It strips away the oil barrier your skin needs to protect itself. It also dilates the blood vessels and can make your skin look red and blotchy. Stick to lukewarm water. You should also use a face cloth, so long as you wash it at least every two days, preferably everyday. These bamboo face cloths are hypoallergenic which means they resist germs, odors, fungus & more. Ideal for acne-prone skin!
If you’re dealing with acne and breakouts, it’s important that you don’t further inflame it by covering it up with comedogenic makeup. Give your skin time to breathe by avoiding makeup as much as possible, and only use certified clean beauty brands, which are free from toxic chemicals. This is important because it allows your skin to reach its own natural balance. Remember, anything you put on your skin will enter your bloodstream!
If you’re new to clean beauty and aren’t familiar with the plethora of incredible brands, here’s a list to help you start to discover just how much is on offer:
- The Detox Market – a curated marketplace designed to be a safe-haven from the under-regulated beauty industry. They stock makeup, skincare, supplements and have their own subscription box.
- Petit Vour – Another fantastic marketplace that only stocks products from brands that are high quality, ethical and toxin free. I love that they also have a zero waste beauty section.
- Blinc Inc. – Originally founded to formulate the perfect anti-clumping mascara, they now have a whole range of vegan and cruelty free make up.
- Clove + Hallow – Award winning clean, cruelty free and vegan cosmetics that are super affordable. I love their fun and easy makeup quiz, and their packaging is gorgeous.
- Ecco Bella – Make up made from flowers! Their make up products are infused with flower cutins, the delicate coating which protects flowers from the elements. I love that they have refillable compacts too.
Dealing with Scarring
After I finally achieved clear skin, my next priority was to reduce my scarring. If you’re in the same boat, a derma roller is a fantastic and inexpensive way to clear acne scarring, even your skin’s texture and fade fine lines. Essentially dermarolling is a form of microneedling, and a dermaroller is a little wheel covered in hundreds of tiny needles. When you roll it across problem areas it creates tiny injuries on the surface of the skin and activates your self-healing mechanisms and encourages collagen and elastin production. Over time, this fades scars and blurs signs of aging.
This article by Healthline recommends using a dermaroller needle length of 1.0mm for shallow acne scars and 1.5 mm for deep acne scars.
What has worked for me is once a week after cleansing and using this Niacinamide and Zinc serum as dermarolling also increases the efficacy of products. Firstly, I disinfect my dermaroller with a disinfectant spray and gently roll my problem areas horizontally, vertically and diagonally, 8 times in each direction. Do not press down while you roll and don’t roll over active breakouts. Then I spray the dermaroller again and store it away. I finish with this gentle moisturizer from the Ordinary.
I really hope this blog post has helped you and given you some direction in how you can clear your skin naturally. Let me know in the comments what your skin story is, I’d love to hear from you!
