What is Maskne?
Let’s start by discussing what maskne actually is. It’s acne or skin irritation that comes from wearing a mask or face covering for extended periods of time. The name is a clever blending of the words ‘mask’ and ‘acne’.
Maskne is different from other types of acne. This is because you don’t need to figure out whether you have underlying hormonal, lifestyle or hereditary issues. However, if you do have a predisposition to acne, you may be more likely to encounter maskne as well.
So is happening to your skin when you get maskne? When you wear a mask, it’s causing extra pressure on the bridge of your nose, on your cheeks and chin. This added heat and rubbing can lead to irritation and inflammation. Acne is essentially caused by clogged pores, and masks can expose your pores to microbial growth, residual oils and make up.
But don’t worry, there are some super simple steps you can take to treat existing maskne and prevent future breakouts. Plus, you can stay safe and continue wearing a mask too! 🙂
How To Get Rid of Maskne
If you’re already dealing with maskne, the first step has to be treating your existing breakouts. One of my favorite clean beauty brands, Ora’s Amazing Herbal has recently come to our collective rescue by putting together their Maskne Skin Care set. Following their 4 step regimen is a great way to both treat existing acne, and prevent the next crop from forming.
Steam Your Pores
The first step is a soothing steam (aptly named Take a Breather), to gently open your pores to prepare them for deep cleansing. All you need to do is place ¼ cup of herbs into 4 cup of hot water. Then, carefully position yourself over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. This will not only help your pores, it’s also a great way to open up your sinuses and provide you with some well-deserved self-care.
Cleanse Your Pores
Next, it’s time to cleanse. Their cleanser, Squeaky Clean is a slightly different yet awesome type of cleanser. It comes in a powder form and all you need to do is mix a teaspoon with water and gently apply it to your face. You leave it on to work it’s magic for up to 1 minute and then complete the deep clean by washing it off with warm water in a circular motion.
Soothe Your Pores
Third is the Blissful Earth Oil. This multipurpose oil soothes the skin while its potent blend of herbs combat microbial growth. It leaves your skin nourished and smooth.
Protect Your Pores
Last, but certainly not least is their awesome All Purpose Salve. Think of this salve as your secret weapon spot treatment. It can help to resolve pesky spots a few days faster than just leaving them to heal on their own. The non-comedogenic blend of organic herbs like Tea Tree Oil help to dry out the spot, while the natural oils like Jojoba, provide a layer of protection to prevent further inflammation. You may find it helpful to apply a very thin layer of All Purpose salve to your skin before donning your mask.
Like always, avoid popping your pimples. This only leads to increased inflammation and scarring, which you definitely don’t want!
How To Prevent Maskne:
Now that we’ve covered how to treat any existing breakouts, let’s go over how to prevent them.
A Solid Skin Care Routine
Having a solid skincare routine, like the one detailed above is an essential first step. Washing your face is imperative, so be meticulous about performing your skincare routine twice a day. You should avoid harsh products with crazy chemicals in their ingredients lists, as they will just further inflame your skin. It may seem counterintuitive to apply oil or salves to your skin, but lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers prevent dryness, and help to repair the skin’s natural protective barrier.
When you have active breakouts, it’s always a good idea to let your skin breathe. Further clogging your pores with makeup will only further exacerbate the problem. Do you need to wear makeup under your mask? Wearing products like foundation, concealer or powder can cause build up on the skin. Add that to the increased friction and heat of wearing a mask, and it’s a recipe for disaster.
Treat Acne From the Inside Out
Daily skin care habits like eating a good diet and drinking plenty of water will always be the best way to treat acne from the inside out. However, there is one skin supplement that is worth trying. Skin Squad Pre+Probiotic from Hum Nutrition nurtures your gut and clears your skin naturally. It was specifically formulated to help clear acne-prone (non-cystic) skin by balancing the gut microbiome. It contains 9 different strains of probiotic, 40 billion organisms and konjac root, which is a powerful prebiotic. If you’re interested, you can get $10 off your first order with the code below. After using these for about a month I really started to notice a difference in my skin! I’ve struggled with acne for the last 10 years and I’ve always been a big believer in healing the body from the inside out. This, combined with the Daily Cleanse, have really helped in reducing the number of breakouts and giving my skin a nice glow. I’ve especially noticed a decrease in my hormonal acne, which is usually worst around my time of the month and this has really helped.
Wash Your Mask
If you use disposable masks, you should replace it daily to avoid the inevitable build up of oil and sweat. You can also air it out between uses. However, using disposable masks are not only costly to your wallet, they’re also terrible for the environment. If you can, switch to a reusable face mask, like this best seller from Made Trade. They’re sustainable, made in Portland, and come in a great variety of different sizes, colors and sets. They’re easily washable, all you need to do is hand wash in warm water with a mild laundry detergent. Here’s what one of their happy customers had to say:
I really like these masks. They are great quality and comfortable and fine on my sensitive skin.
